Home Safety Tips

95% of home accidents are preventable!
Avoid Poisoning

HAP

Medicines are the greatest cause of poisoning.
Follow medicine directions carefully.

Avoid Falls

HAP

Lighting Falls are the most common home accident. Be smart - don’t walk around the house in low light! Use good lighting and low energy light bulbs. If you are up during the night? Put on a bedside light before you get out of bed.

Eyes

HAP

Get your eyesight checked every year. Take care if using bi-focals.
Contact your optician you may be entitled to a free eye examination.

Avoid Scalds

HAP

Always put cold water in the bath first. Use a small kettle i.e. 1 litre kettle or smaller and fill only to the level that is needed.

Avoid Fire

HAP

Many people are burned in house fires. Chip pans and smokers’ materials are the biggest causes.  Make sure cigarettes are put out, especially before going to bed.

Always use a fireguard and fix it to the wall.  Don’t hang washing around a fire to dry.

Give yourself early warning of fire - fit a smoke alarm, check it regularly and make sure the batteries are working.
